The technology industry

Tech dominates every aspect of our daily lives, and new advances in digital, networking, infrastructure, software, and mobile technology are introduced to the market on a weekly basis.

The global information technology industry is set to reach an eye-watering $5 trillion value in 2019 (International Data Corporation), and the UK’s tech sector is growing over 2.5 times faster than the overall economy. Careers in technology

Technology jobs present themselves in a seemingly infinite number of combinations – whether you work in IT support & infrastructure; development & testing; business change; networking & telecoms; information security; database & business intelligence or tech management, there are lots of ways you can contribute. Check out the breakdowns below and contact our recruitersto find out more:

Design

Bringing a plan to life – designers can be as creative as a marketer, as technically biased as developers and anywhere in between. Whether handling the finer points of UX or UI on a website, or acting as the technical authority on the design of a high profile software application, designers are an integral part of the process. In our article we provide a comprehensive look at working as a UX/UI Designer in the UK.

Development

Focusing on writing the code – from embedded software engineers to mobile developers, back-end database developers to front-end web developers, these people use object-oriented programming languages such as C#, C++, Java, HTML5, Python and many others to build the software that we use on a daily basis. If you would like to find out more about the role of a Software Developer, read our ultimate guide to working as a developer.

Test & quality assurance

Evaluating code and seeking out bugs – software testers work directly with developers to understand the limitations of a piece of software and use both manual and automated testing tools and techniques to ensure that the software products that reach the market are in top condition.

Development operations (DevOps)

Bridging the gap between functions – DevOps has sprung into a life of its own as software development teams become more and more complex and diverse. DevOps engineers and aligning roles such as application packagers and release managers work directly with web & software teams to ensure that products are brought to market quickly and effectively. IT support

Keeping users online and engaged – operating either remotely from a helpdesk or out in the field, support analysts are typically divided into 1st line, 2nd line and 3rd line support teams in order to resolve incidents and problems in order of severity and complexity. Certain teams can also be specialised further into application support, network/telecoms support and hardware/infrastructure support. Read our article to learn more about becoming an IT Consultant.

IT engineering

Installing and maintaining the workspace – IT engineers come in a variety of specialisms. Desktop support engineers manage the terminals and interfaces directly with users, infrastructure engineers handle the core platforms such as servers and mailboxes, network engineers manage the system connections and security across and between sites and telecoms engineers focus specifically on communications equipment. Find out more about the role of a network engineer in our guide. In many cases, IT engineers will also handle 2nd & 3rd line support calls. Check out our article if you've ever wondered what a role as an IT Project Manager role looks like?

Management & administration

Curating and optimising business systems – IT managers, systems administrators and database administrators look after the operating environment as a whole and will often dip into many different aspects of IT including support, development, change and design. Chiefly, DBAs and SysAdmins are there to investigate potential improvements and/or problems to their systems and work with operating systems including Windows Server, MS Azure, Amazon Web Services and Linux/Unix, and database tools such as SQL, MySQL and Oracle.

Projects & change

Driving business forward – Business change is a catch-all term that involves replacing, fixing, upgrading or implementing new features/processes within an organisation. Business analysts establish and capture requirements, implementation consultants directly provide the service, project managers take charge of the overall delivery and change managers will typically manage the key relationships required to keep stakeholders engaged.

Information security

Keeping your users safe – cyber security is a complicated yet vitally important issue that affects both businesses and individuals alike. Ethical hackers, security analysts and penetration testers work with the wider IT function to ensure that both users and systems are safe from external attack. We have all the information you might need on starting a career as a Cybersecurity Analyst, read our article to find out more.

Business intelligence

Gathering and analysing data – Data analysts, BI developers, report writers and consultants are in the business of contextualising the data hidden in the system. Using tools such as SSRS, SSAS, Crystal Reports and others, effective business intelligence offers businesses the best way to understand themselves. Leadership

Taking control of the situation – businesses will often employ a head of IT, IT director, chief information officer, chief technical officer or business systems manager to act as the strategic oversight that influences the way the wide IT function operates. Closer to the tools, software managers, support managers, service desk managers etc. directly supervise teams to ensure a smooth ‘business as usual’ delivery.
